CHRISTMAS - A PAGAN FESTIVAL OR CHRIST'S BIRTH FESTIVAL?
CHRISTMAS - A PAGAN FESTIVAL OR CHRIST'S BIRTH FESTIVAL?
Is Christmas really a pagan festival? No, it is not.
WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THE WORD PAGAN?
* The defination of pagan, is a person who worships many idols(gods) or who worships nature and the earth.
Let's look at the meaning of festival?
WHAT IS FESTIVAL?
* Festival is a celebration of a certain kind or event, often held periodically.
There are many festivals that are existing on this planet earth, however Christmas is one of them. Christmas has brought many controversies among many preachers of today in christaindom.
Many preachers do claim that Christmas is a festival from pit of hell, a festival that has its origin from linked to a pagan festival. Can these claims be truly what these preachers say about Christmas?
Christmas is never a pagan festival. And all that is known among christains is that Jesus Christ is tha reason behind what they celebrate as Christmas not any pagan idol or god.
December 25 may not be written in the Bible as the day Jesus Christ was born but it was a day choosen to celebrate his birth, or was Jesus Christ not born? Or was His birth not celebrated in tha bible? Or didnt His birth bring happiness into the hearts of those who are in expectant of His birth? If Christmas is a pagan festival, i will like any preacher who is against Christmas to tell me the name of the idol or god that is been celebrated on December 25 and the link between the pagan idol and Jesus Christ? I will like him to tell me more about the idol or god, maybe the idol or god is from africa or rome or asia.
Now if these preachers or pastors say Christmas is a festival that orignated from a pagan festival or it's origin is linked to a pagan festival, then let's talk about SUNDAY ( the Lord's Day right ). You preachers or pastors go to your churches on sundays and preach to your congregations right?. Do you know the origin of the name SUNDAY?
NOW ORIGIN OF SUNDAY.
In Roman culture, sunday was the day of the SUN god. In Roman paganism, the SUN was a source of life, giving warmth and illumination to mankind. So worshipping the SUN is the centre of a popular cult among the Romans, who would stand at dawn to catch the first rays of sunshine as they pray.
Now that we have seen sunday, as a name that originated from the pagans day of worshipping the SUN, DOES THAT MEANS YOU PREACHERS OR PASTORS THAT GO TO YOUR CHURCHES ON SUNDAYS, WORSHIP THE SUN OR PREACH ABOUT THE SUN?
One of the early church fathers, named st. Jerome once said "if the pagans call the Lord's day, the day of the SUN, we christains agree, for today (first day of the week) is revealed, the light of the world is raised(i.e Jesus Christ).
What st. Jerome's point of view was, is that if the pagans claimed the Lord's day is the day of their SUN god, christains agree but to them it is the day first day of the week that was revealed that Jesus Christ was raised.
A similiar consideration on Christmas, the pagans celebrate whatever they worship on December 25, and the christains celebrate the birth of their Saviour. I wonder why these preachers or pastors still wear clothes to churches, cos the pagans too do wear clothes to their shrines. Does that mean clothes are meant for pagans alone and it is abominations to christains?
The mode of dressing must be different to differenciate them from the pagans. So also in December 25, what christains celebrate is different from what pagans celebrate.
Christ is the reason behind this season to the christains and not a pagan god or idol. It is Christmas and not sango-mas or ogun-mas or obatala-mas.
Dear readers what is your take on this. Kindly leave a comment.
